Editorial Reviews: There were a lot of disappointments in the 2000 summer movie season, but Chicken Run wasn't one of them. Made by Aardman Animations, which produced the Oscar-winning Wallace & Gromit shorts, this is a dazzling stop-motion animation film that is both deftly funny and surprisingly touching. The concept is simple: The Great Escape--with chickens. But directors Peter Lord and Nick Park take it much further than that (and remember: there's a whole generation out there that has no idea who Steve McQueen is). Julia Sawalha voices Ginger, a plucky English hen who has been trying to escape from Tweedy's chicken farm, where the vicious Mrs. Tweedy (Miranda Richardson) fries up any chicken who doesn't produce enough eggs. When egg profits slump, Mrs. Tweedy decides to turn her farm into a chicken-pie factory, giving new urgency to Ginger's plan. Enter Rocky the Flying Rooster (Mel Gibson), a brash American who has escaped from a circus and promises to teach the chickens to fly to safety. The film is filled with innumerable visual touches and the animation has a tactile quality that makes you want to reach out and touch these funny fowl. Above all, it's played with intelligence, wit, and heart--a rare combination in any film. While Chicken Run is being marketed to a youth audience, it truly is a family film that operates on both a child and an adult level. Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Nick Park does it again Comment: I thought the artistry was great in this movie, but it's definitely not for youngsters who like claymation. The subject content was pretty morbid, even though the movie ends positively. I was kind of shocked that it was so violently suggestive - it was scary, and I'm an adult. I felt uncomfortable, which is why I don't watch it that often. After seeing this, I am much happier watching his other works like "Wallace and Gromit", which is far more suitable for children. Customer Rating: Summary: Disney has got a serious rival Comment: I saw this movie yesterday with its original dialogue, and I must say that I was stunned. The creators who made the "Wallace & Gromtit"-shorties have gone and delivered what has got to be one of the best movies of this year and one of the best animated-films ever. This film looks fantastic, the voices are perfect, the setting is brilliantly created and the atmosphere of the chicken-farm in the 1950`s England is perfect. This is an animated film, that will be loved by kids and adults alike. It is also a good and interesting story that is excellently told, and this keeps you glued until the end. I previewed the tape prior to giving it to our grandson a week from Monday for his 7th birthday. Veddy British and utterly charming, Chicken Run will make you think about freedom, friendship, loyalty, determination, courage, dignity and tasty chicken pies with mixed vegetables.
