It is a rather cheaply made device and I don't know how long the spring mechanism will last, but for occasional use it should last a lifetime. IT is easy to use and works well. Customer Rating: Summary: Simple, works Comment: I tried measuring my waist with a regular sewing tape measure - it's very hard to read it, to hold it steady, and to know how much pressure to apply. You can easily get +/- 1" that way. With the MyoType measure, it is lightly spring-loaded, so you don't need to guess at whether you're holding it correctly or not or applying the right pressure - you just wrap the tape around your body, press the little spring loaded retractor button, and read the measurement. I check this at least once a week to view results from my exercise and diet program - the results are very consistent, and I'm able to see my waistline gradually shrinking.
