It is as affordable as other stainless trash cans of similar size, but this one offers the hands-free automatic opening. I actually have bought two of these, but the gear in the first one broke after it got stuck and I tried forcing it to close (not a good idea). I have now learned my lesson and if the lid on the new one ever gets stuck in the open position again, I'll know to be more gentle. I highly recommend this trash can -- just be a little careful with the lid if you want it to last. Every now and then a glitch with the lid but still going strong even after a cross country move (where the outside got a bit dinged) but I wouldn't trade it (and will buy another when I have to replace this one). The main lid does not fit well on the metal can, and the plastic ring to support trash bag does not fit securely within the metal can, so the heavy lid sometimes tips, and the trash bag often slides down into the can.
